A Controversial End
by Matt Martino
Angelo Taylor will have to wait until the next world championship to try and win a global hurdling title.
His season ended on Saturday in Berlin, when he finished fourth in a preliminary heat with a time of 49.64 seconds -- just missing a chance to advance to the 400m hurdles semifinals at the IAAF World Championships.
But as been the case for Angelo a couple of times this strange season, the race was decided in the face of controversy. The third-place finisher, Brendan Cole of Australia, beat Angelo by one hundredth of a second but was disqualified after the event for trail leg violations over the first, second and seventh hurdles.
That would have sent Angelo on to the semis. However, a protest by members of the Australian delegation was upheld via video evidence. Team USA officials and Angelo to launched their own appeal, but the Jury of Appeals declined Angelo’s reinstatement early Sunday morning.
The two-time Olympic champion said he got off to a good start in the race, only to fade at the end.
Kerron Clement, who finished second to Angelo in the Beijing Olympics, won the world championship Tuesday.
