Angelo Taylor has proven himself one of the world's greatest hurdlers at 400m.

Now, he's making a name for himself without hurdles, too.

Competing at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Rome on Thursday night, Angelo was trailing late in the 400m when he turned on the afterburners. As related by World-Track.org:

Former Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner of USA looked shaky but managed to hold on for victory in the men’s 400m dash at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Rome Thursday night.

The American looked to have had the race wrapped up with 50m go, but a strong challenge from fellow countryman Angelo Taylor almost paid off before he ran out of real estate.

Wariner, in the end just took victory in a world best time of 44.73 seconds, just over Taylor, who ran 44.74 for second. Bahamian world indoor champion Chris Brown was third in 45.05, while Trinidadian Renny Quow (45.52) was fourth.

Incredibly, Angelo is one-hundredth of a second off the world lead at 400m, set by Wariner -- barely -- in the Rome meet.

Here's a video of the race from Universal Sports:
